EASTER CONFERENCE 2009 BIBLE STUDY

THEME: THE PENTECOST EXPERIENCE.

TOPIC:  THE FULFILLED LIFE THROUGH THE

HOLY SPIRIT.

TEXT:  JOHN 16:7-14

"Nevertheless, I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

And when he come, he will reprove the word of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my father, and you see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he the Spirit of truth is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come. He shall glorify Me: for He shall receive of Mine, and shall shew it unto you".

INTRODUCTION:

Many in this present world are said to be living or have lived a fulfilled life, but what makes a man's life to be fulfilled? This is the issue at stake. Jesus Christ our Lord in one of His teachings asked a deep searching question that will serve as a pointer to the real meaning of a fulfilled life. "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul. Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" Mk 8:36-37.

So, from this statement of our LORD, a fulfilled life is not based on MATERIALISM OR MATERIAL ACQUISITION. It is based on ones good relationship with God through the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is our example of one that lived a fulfilled life when we consider His mission on earth. He fulfilled the Father's purpose of sending Him to the world as a REDEEMER.

Apostle Paul was another example of a man who lived a fulfilled life by accomplishing the purpose of GOD for raising him up as a preacher to the gentiles; hence he made a conclusive statement before his departure; "For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Hence there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the LORD, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them that love His appearing." 11Tim.4:6-8.

Therefore, this study is aimed at drawing the individual believer's attention to the need of a fulfilled life in Christ Jesus.

WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

Some or many people are confused about who the Holy Spirit is. Some take Him to be an active force, some call or regard the Holy Spirit as wind, while some have the notion that the Holy Spirit is just an influential expression which the Almighty God uses from time to time. But this study will clarify the issue and show that the Holy Spirit is a personality, the third rank in the Blessed Trinity. He is not an active or influential force, but He is God Himself.

A FULFILLED LIFE, WHO IS IT MEANT FOR?

A fulfilled life should be the ultimate or highest achievement for a Christian based on his or her consistent spiritual development and on an unbroken relationship with GOD.

HOW CAN A CHRISTIAN LIVE A FULFILLED LIFE?

One is said to have lived a fulfilled Christian life by maintaining these under-listed qualities:

  • i. By consistent study of the word of God. Josh. 1:8
  • ii. By steady walk in the light of God. 1John 1:7
  • iii. Through constant prayer. 1Thess. 5:17
  • iv. By abiding in the word. John 15:7
  • v. By trusting in the Lord always. Psalm 37:3
  • vi. By obeying the Lord always. Isaiah 1:19
  • vii. By constant praise and worship to God. Psalm 107:8
  • viii. By fervent love for the brethren-a life of sharing and caring. 1Peter 1:22; Matth. 25:40
  • ix. By maintaining a HOLY LIFE. 1Peter 1:15-16
  • x. By constantly having a right-standing with GOD-righteousness. 1John 3:7.

WHAT ARE THE ROLES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN A FULFILLED CHRISTIAN LIFE?

Below are some of the roles of the Holy Spirit in a fulfilled Christian life.

i           The Holy Spirit frees the believer in Christ from the law of sin and empowers him to live the expected fulfilled Christian life. Rom. 8:2

ii           The Spirit puts God's law in the believer's heart. 11Cor. 3:3

iii          The Spirit effects the circumcision of the heart. Rom. 2:29

iv          He teaches and guides the Christian into all truth. John 16:13; 14:26

v          He helps the Christian to pray always. Rom. 8:26

vi          He intercedes for the Christian. Rom. 8:27.

WHAT ARE THE REPERCUSSIONS FOR NEGLECTING THE HOLY SPIRIT?

i           That person (Christian) will miss the guidance of the Holy Spirit and will be led by the flesh. Consequently, he or she will fulfill the lust of the flesh. Rom. 8:5-8

ii           The person will miss the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and will depend solely on the arm of flesh which will eventually fail him. Jeremiah 17:5

iii          Encouragement that comes from the Holy Spirit will be absent because the COMFORTER (Holy Spirit) is absent. Therefore, he will be filled with sorrow of mind and confusion. 1Sam. 16:14.
